Two Teachers Receive National Certification
Two Central A & M teachers have recently received
National Board Certification. The rigorous, multi-year process is
designed to recognize – on a national level – the standard of
achievement of the recipients. Those individuals that possess the
certification are certified to teach in every state.
Marcia Berg teaches high school science and
chemistry, and has been in the district for 18 years. Melissa Dolan is a
fifth grade teacher at Gregory Intermediate School and is completing 22
years here. Congratulations to both Marcia Berg and Melissa Dolan on
this nationally-recognized accomplishment.
The New Superintendent
As listed in the last newsletter, Dr. Kyle
VonSchnase will be the new superintendent, beginning July 1, 2012. Did
you know that he is married (Jessica) and has three children? Kylie will
be in the third grade, Haley will be in the second grade, and Kaiden
will be in kindergarten.
Legislator Information
Please visit our website at
www.cam.k12.il.us and click on the link to find your legislator contact information. Help
us lobby your government officials to fully fund education and to
restore promised funding for the current fiscal year. Specifically, the
State Aid and Transportation payments should be made to districts
throughout the State as promised. For our district, this loss for this
school year will be in excess of $150,000.
Foundation
Did you know that you can make a tax-deductable gift
to a Foundation to benefit students in the Central A & M Schools? An
educational foundation has recently been formed with the mission – “..to
acquire and distribute resources to Central A & M Community Unit
District #21 to enhance, enrich and encourage learning opportunities for
its students, staff and community.”

Earthquake Preparedness
On Tuesday, February 7, all of our students in each
of the Central A & M schools will participate in an earthquake
preparedness drill. Please review the following information for relevant
information regarding the drill and information for home preparedness,
as well.
The Great Central U.S.
200 years ago, a series of major earthquakes struck the Mississippi
River Valley along the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Recent events remind us
that damaging earthquakes can happen at any time. With more than 40
million people living and working in the region today, a major
earthquake would cause widespread damage and disruption.
What we do now, before a big earthquake, will determine what our lives
will be like afterwards. With earthquakes an inevitable part of our
future, we must act quickly to ensure that disasters do not become
catastrophes.
The Great Central U.S. ShakeOut in February 2012 will involve more than
1 million people through a broad‐based outreach program, partnership
with the media, and public advocacy by hundreds of partners. This event
is being organized by the Central United States Earthquake Consortium
and the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana,
Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. The ShakeOut will be
centered around a simultaneous
Drop, Cover, and Hold On
drill that will be held at 10:15 AM CDT on February 7, 2012.
Drop, Cover, and Hold On
is the easy‐to remember
and recommended personal protective action to take in the event of an
earthquake.
February 7th is also the 200th anniversary of the last of the 1811‐12
earthquakes that destroyed the town of New Madrid, Missouri and created
Reelfoot Lake in northwest Tennessee.
A key aspect of the ShakeOut is the integration of earthquake research
and the lessons learned from social science research about why people
get prepared for disasters. The result is a “teachable moment” on par
with having an actual earthquake (often followed by increased interest
in getting ready for earthquakes). The ShakeOut creates the sense of
urgency that is needed for people, organizations, and communities to get
prepared, to practice what to do to be safe, and to learn what plans
need to be improved. The ShakeOut inspires communities to work together
towards disaster preparedness, and sets aside specific time for them to
take proactive action to become better prepared. For more information, visit www.shakeout.org/centralus
