Mrs. Gillett has developed the 6th grade reading program around her belief that the more children read, the better readers they will become, and ultimately they will become better students.  She believes that reading a variety of literature increases the students' background knowledge, broadens vocabulary, and strengthens comprehension.

Below are the expectations for 6th grade students' independent reading.

Each nine weeks, read books and take the Reading Counts quizzes for a total of 50 points.
Read at least 3 books nominated for the  Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award.
Complete exercises to strengthen comprehension.
Each nine weeks, read books and take the Accelerated Reader quizzes to obtain student's individual goal.
Complete exercises to strengthen comprehension.  Read at least 3 nonfiction books.
