Getting Started With Dreamweaver
Ground Rules for Web Pages
- Every page should have a title.
- All files (pages and images) should be named in lower case (no capital letters).
- There should be no spaces in file names.
- There should be no symbols in file names.
- File names should be simple and related to the content of the page. If you must use 2 words (or more) use an underscore (like my_webpage.htm) between the 2 words.
Directions (if you are using Dreamweaver).
The first time you open Dreamweaver, you may get a dialog box that looks like the image below. Select Designer. You probably won't see this box after the first time the program is opened. Once the program is open, you can switch back and forth between design view and code view easily.

- Open a new page in Dreamweaver. When you open the program you will be asked to select the type of file you want to open.
- Give the page a title. The title for this page will be Getting Started. In the image below the title is Untitled Document. Remember that the title is used by search engines and will also be used as the text if your site is bookmarked. It should be like the title of a book or an article.

- Save the page as properties.htm
- In the menu bar, select Modify / Page properties. The image below is what you should see.

- Set the page font to Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif. Set the size to 12 pixels. Select a text color and a background color that are compatible. Set the left, right, top and bottom margins to 0 pixels. Find a suitable image on the internet for a background. Save it to your computer. By Backgound imag: select the browse button and locate the image on your computer. Select the iamge. Click Apply at the bottom of the Page Properties dialog box.

- Click on the Links category. The font and size can stay the same. Choose a link color, visited links, rollover links and active links colors. Be sure that you will be able to see these colors with the background you have chosen.
- Type Page Properties somewhere on the page. Save the file.
- Upload the file to www.ivhs.k12.il.us or submit it in the Unit 3 Exercise dropbox.
