Illinois became a state in 1818. The settling of Illinois started from the south along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and worked its way northward. The first capitol of Illinois was Kaskaskia. The capitol was then moved to Vandalia which was more centrally located. It was not long before a group of legislators, lead by Abraham Lincoln, wanted to move the capitol to Springfield. This group became known as the Long Nine.
