This unit
is designed to be used with second grade students. It is a collaborative unit
combining the library, art, and the classroom. Students will be learning about the
Caldecott medal and the medal winners while they create their own works of art and
practice book talking using the Caldecott medal books. The unit takes 5 weeks to
complete, assuming that students visit the library once a week for 45 minute periods, have
art class once a week for one hour each, and are given classroom time to complete the book
talks. The unit can be viewed by using the table of contents at the left. The objectives and instructional roles of each department are discussed. The unit has also been aligned with the Illinois Learning Standards for ease in integrating it into a curriculum. Each day is broken down to specific activities and the culminating project is discussed. Assessment and follow-up are added to aid in determining the success of the unit. "A good picture book should be true. That is to say, it should rise out of the lives and passions of its creators. A book that is created as a commodity will remain just that, however successful that commodity may turn out to be." Arnold Lobel |
